On windows 10 I accidentally had my headphones muted only for RPCS3. You can for example change this in your advanced audio settings or in the volume mixer as seen in the attached screenshots. That being said, I just tested this on windows and I confirmed that XAudio2 works flawlessly when switching audio devices on windows.
